ROM has held bi-monthly book club meetings to improve reading comprehension at the women’s county jail in Lynwood for 5 years, and weekly meetings at the higher-security level men’s facility in Castaic. Soon we will be launching a book club in the new library at Men’s Central Jail in downtown LA.
ROM chooses the first title based on our research and past experience with inmates. Subsequent books are chosen with input from them. We strive to include books that are engaging and well-written, containing themes incorporating life-skills, parenting, personal perceptions and existential questions – all ideal for generating discussion. ROM book club choices are usually award-winning or popular titles suited to the Lexile levels of Lexile-assessed participants.
